BRAC began its microfinance programme in Pakistan in 2007. The objective of the microfinance programme is to contribute to the reduction of poverty, create self-employment opportunities, enhance household income level, and reduce vulnerabilities of the rural poor. Focused exclusively around women, BRAC’s microfinance programme aims to strengthen the income base of poor women by providing access to credit that in turn enables them to start and expand income generating enterprises.

BRAC Pakistan’s microfinance programme has three main components: microloans, small enterprises programme (SEP), and agriculture programme. The objectives of the microfinance programme are to significantly contribute to the reduction of poverty, create self-employment opportunities, enhance household income level, and reduce vulnerabilities of the rural poor in Pakistan, especially women. BRAC Pakistan emphasises on increasing poor households’ access to credit, and offers savings services through a regulated microfinance bank. It also provides marginalised women with more opportunities for income-generating activities to empower them socially and financially.

BRAC Pakistan’s Microfinance Programme has recently initiated branchless banking to minimise the money bearing liabilities of field staff and financial inclusion of poorest of the women.
