Hazara's life drastically changed after her eye-sight and her capability to work was severely impaired through an acid attack. The local BRAC Citizen Action Group (Polli Somaj) immediately provided emergency assistance by bringing her to the hospital and contacting the police. In addition to ensuring that Hazara received free legal representation through BRAC's Human Rights and Legal Services (HRLS), the Citizen Action Group (Polli Somaj) helped her access government social services. She is now receiving 15,000 Taka ($215) and is part of the government benefits program.

HAZARA'S STORY

Hazara had acid thrown on her face after her husband refused to pay a bribe to set up a shop in the local market.

Hazara and her fellow BRAC Citizen Action Group <i>(Polli Somaj)</i> members. The Citizen Action Group <i>(Polli Somaj)</i> assisted her in becoming part of the BRAC's Targeting the Ultra-Poor program. She received a cow, chickens and goats. She uses the animals to earn money to support her family.

Citizen Action Group <i>(Polli Somaj)</i> members are the agents that implement BRAC's 'zero tolerance towards violence' policy in their local community.

A program officer representing BRAC legal services leaves the BRAC branch office in Hazara's village. The BRAC Citizen Action Group <i>(Polli Somaj)</i> of which Hazara is a part, connected her to BRAC's legal aid services.

Hazara's case is ongoing. Despite receiving threats forcing her to shut down the litigation, Hazara has refused. She continues to pursue justice with the help of BRAC and her Citizen Action Group <i>(Polli Somaj)</i> members.

Hazara's daughter who lives in Dhaka most of the year and works as a maid servant. Hazara sent her to work in Dhaka after her daughter was continually harassed by men in her community.

Hazara continues her life with much struggle, but has hopes for a positive outcome for her case against her attackers.
