Milk for good

Aiming to increase farmers’ income through an increase in milk production, BRAC started its artificial insemination programme in 1987 which resulted in increased milk production. During that time there was a low demand for this extra milk in rural areas but no system of milk storage.

From 1998, BRAC started collecting and processing milk through chilling centres in rural areas. As a result, opportunities to sell the extra milk at a fair price was created for the dairy farmers. Currently, BRAC collects an average of 143,000 litres of milk from 30,000 registered farmers through 134 chilling centres. The milk is processed in its own factory and various dairy products are manufactured for the customers.

BRAC Dairy and Food Project operates with the mission to create livelihood opportunities for dairy farmers, impact the nutritional intake of the country and connect consumers to quality products.
